Handy Caravan Storage Tips

30 September 2024

One of the best parts about caravanning is being able to bring all your essentials with you on the road. Of course, you’re still limited by space when it comes to your home on wheels, so it’s important to make the most of what’s available. A well-organised caravan helps keep everything in its place and ensures that you can easily find what you need when you need it. We’ll share some handy tips and tricks for maximising storage in your caravan, allowing you to focus on what really matters – enjoying the journey.

Overhead Storage

When you first step in your caravan…look up! Overhead storage is often underutilised, but it can be a real game-changer.

Overhead cabinets are perfect for storing lightweight items such as bedding and clothes. You can keep them organised by adding shelving that will allow you to stack even more items. Opt for adjustable shelves, so you can choose the height to suit the space. You can even add wire racks, shelf dividers and pull-out baskets to help keep your items neat and accessible.

And don’t forget the ceiling! It’s a great space for the right equipment. You can install hooks or nets to hang lightweight items like hats and jackets, or even sports equipment. Just be sure to secure it in place for the trip.

Under-bed and Under-seat Storage

Now it’s time to turn your attention down low and think about all the valuable space you have just waiting for you.

The space beneath your bed is ideal for storing larger items you don’t need every day, such as folding chairs, outdoor gear, and extra bedding. Invest in some sturdy storage bins or boxes that fit neatly under your bed. For items like extra bedding, towels, or out-of-season clothing, vacuum storage bags are a great option. If you want to take your under-bed storage to the next level, consider installing sliding drawers so you can simply pull them out when you need something.

Don’t let the space beneath your caravan seats go unused either. For smaller or irregularly shaped areas you can use folding or collapsible storage containers that can adapt to the size of the space available and are particularly useful for storing items like blankets, cushions, or picnic supplies. Plus, they can be folded down when not in use to save even more space.

We take our storage seriously, so, in all Cub Caravans you’ll find generous under bed storage and an additional pull-out drawer under the bed step.

Wall Space

Walls offer a surprising amount of storage space, and with the right accessories, you can free up valuable cupboard and drawer space while keeping your essentials neatly arranged.

Hooks and racks are great ways to free up the clutter, for example:

  • Coat and hat hook: Hang those coats, scarves and more out of the way.
  • Key holder: Handy for knowing where your keys are at all times when you aren’t on the road.
  • Utensils in the kitchen: Instead of cluttering up drawers, just hang it up!
  • Bathroom racks and hooks: Use them to hang towels, toiletries, or even a shower caddy.

Magnetic strips and pegboards are another great flexible storage option:

  • Magnetic strips for knives and tools: By mounting knives and tools on the wall, you free up valuable counter and drawer space, while also keeping them out of the reach of children.
  • Pegboards for custom storage: Pegboards are incredibly versatile and can be used in various areas of your caravan to store small items. In the kitchen, a pegboard can hold everything from pots and pans to spices and utensils.

Multi-Functional Furniture

In a caravan where space is limited, choosing the right furniture can make all the difference. Multi-functional furniture can help you make the most of the available space, while also adding some extra versatility.

One of the best ways to maximise space in your caravan is by investing in furniture that serves more than one purpose. Dual-purpose furniture pieces are designed to be both practical and space-saving, offering hidden storage or the ability to fold away when not in use.

  • Ottomans with hidden compartments: This space is perfect for storing blankets, cushions, or other items that you want to keep out of sight but still close at hand. Some ottomans can also double as a coffee table or extra seating when guests visit.
  • Foldable tables and chairs: Foldable tables and chairs are great for caravans because they can be easily stored when not in use.
  • Convertible couch: Another great option is a convertible couch, which can be transformed into a bed at night and then easily converted back into a seating area during the day.

Space-saving Gadgets

These clever tools are designed to collapse, fold, or fit together, reducing the amount of space they take up when not in use.

  • Collapsible kitchen items, such as bowls, measuring cups, and colanders, are a must-have for any caravan kitchen. These items can be expanded when needed and then collapsed flat for storage.
  • A foldable dish rack can be set up to dry dishes after meals and then folded flat when not in use. Some even come with additional features like cutlery holders or drip trays that can also be folded or removed for easy storage.
  • Nesting cookware sets are designed to stack neatly inside one another, taking up minimal space in your cupboards. These sets often include pots, pans, and lids that fit together perfectly.
  • If you need a workspace in your caravan, consider a wall-mounted or foldable desk. These can be folded up against the wall when not in use, providing a practical solution for working or writing without taking up permanent space.

Maximising space in a caravan is all about smart planning and clever solutions. By using the tips and ideas shared in this article, you can transform your caravan into a well-organised, efficient, and comfortable space. Proper storage helps you keep clutter at bay and also makes day-to-day life on the road smoother and more convenient. With a bit of thought and creativity, you’ll find that even the smallest spaces can offer all the functionality you need, leaving you free to focus on enjoying the journey ahead.
