If you’re looking for a romantic getaway that offers beach time, winery tours, and gourmet cuisine, then Western Australia is the place to be. The state’s diverse landscape from lush green forests to dusty red canyons makes it an ideal destination for couples looking to explore new territory. This blog post will give you all the information you need about what it has to offer!

The following content will outline some of our favourite places to visit in WA. We’ll also give you a little heads up on the best time to visit Western Australia!

Explorer Closed 45 Degrees

The Explorer.

Also, if you’re a fan of off-road travel, you may like to tour Western Australia in our Explorer—especially if you’re new to the off-roading scene. Light to tow on most medium-sized SUVs, this entry-level model is easy and quick to set up. Explore the more rugged edges of WA in our Explorer: for adventure-loving couples!

Margaret River

If you love to knock back a good bev—wine or beer; pick your poison—then the Margaret River Region is your dream come true. Dotted with breweries and over 80 wineries, you won’t know where to go first. Our pick is the Margaret River Brewhouse, which is the town’s most central brewery. Try one of its eight standard beers, or maybe something from its seasonal selection. As oxymoronic as it may seem, this brewery is family-friendly. Let the kids run loose on the playground or in the sandpit outside while you grapple with choice paralysis over their spectacular menu.

Cheers, big ears!

If wine is more your thing, the Margaret River Region well and truly has you covered (again, we’re talking geriatric quantities of wineries here: over 80). To pluck just one winery from this bubbling bucket of samples: Stella Bella Wines is a 4.8-star winery that’s close to the town centre, slightly south of the actual Margaret River (the body of water). At Stella Bella wines, swilling is serious business. Wine connoisseurs will detect notes of passion (and notes reminiscent of one of their five vineyards) in their varieties of Stella Bella, Suckfizzle, and Luminosa.

By rural standards, Margaret River is located a short distance from Dunsborough (less than an hour by car). It goes without saying, then, that Margaret River is host to some beautiful beaches. Boodjidup Beach is a stunning, white-sand beach on the Western Australian coast. This pristine location provides some of the best surfing and swimming opportunities in town. The water here is so clear that you can see your toes as you swim across to explore what’s beneath the surface! Did we mention it’s also a great spot for birdwatching? There are plenty of shorebirds flying around and nesting nearby. Head out early for a morning walk along the beach to catch them all before they disappear into their burrows for lunch.

Surfer’s Point in Prevelly is a great place to go for surfers of all levels, with waves that are good for beginners and experienced surfers alike. The best time to visit is between November and April when the swell is at its highest. There are many places nearby to eat, drink or stay overnight if you want to make a weekend out of it. For those wanting sunnier weather, Surfers Point can be visited any time outside these months!

Esperance

If you love the beach, you’re going to love Esperance. Located on the south coast of Western Australia, this town is a never ending tour of beaches and nature at its best. Within the Cape Le Grand National Park lies Lucky Bay, which is a lucky find, indeed. As Australia’s whitest beach, everything about it is idyllic, from the terrific turquoise waters to the swimming conditions. As you make your way down to Lucky Bay, keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos—which are ‘bound’ to make your day. If you don’t fancy a dip, perhaps you’d like to take a nature walk along Cape Le Grand Coastal Trail, which leads to Frenchman Peak. Cape Le Grand National Park itself is also something to behold.

Lucky Bay and its pristine white complexion.

Esperance wears its history and Indigenous heritage like a badge of honour. If you want to immerse yourself in the history of the place, be sure to check out The Esperance Museum, which provides a look into the Esperance of yesteryear. Did you know that ‘kepa kurl’ is the Aboriginal name for Esperance? ‘Kepa’ means ‘water’ and ‘kurl’ means ‘boomerang’. Put these two words together and you’ve got ‘where the water lies like a boomerang’. Kepa Kurl is a locally owned Aboriginal company in Esperance. It hosts an Aboriginal art gallery and gift shop and also leads discovery tours. Be sure to check these out! It’s not every day you get to hear about Indigenous history straight from the mouth of a traditional Aboriginal owner.

In Victoria, there’s the Great Ocean Road. In Western Australia, there’s the Great Ocean Drive. Although the latter is merely a fraction of the former’s length (Victoria: 243 kilometres; WA: 40 kilometres), it’s a much more manageable loop with ample swimming and bushwalking opportunities. There are so many stops to include in your drive, such as Nine Mile Beach, the Observatory Point, and the Great Ocean Trail, just to name a few. This continuous highlight reel of beaches is sure to be the highlight of your trip.

Observatory Point

Being a beach town by nature, the best time to visit Esperance, Western Australia is during the warmer months. Some say October and November—the height of spring—is the best time to go. If you want to turn your holiday up a few notches on the thermostat, summer is better, where the highest temperatures average in the mid-20s (as opposed to spring, where the higher temperatures average more in the low- to mid-20s). An Australian summer is anywhere between December and February.

What are you waiting for?

This is a mere glimpse into some of the romantic getaways Western Australia has to offer. Could there be anything more romantic than toasting your relationship with a glass of locally sourced wine in the Margaret River Region? Or taking in a scenic loop of Esperance’s picturesque beach locations? We hope you also take the opportunity to do at least some light off-roading in one of our more rural states. Perhaps venturing off the beaten track—and into the outback—could be a romantic getaway within itself. Wherever you go and whatever you decide to do, you know our camper trailers are built for this stuff. Attach the Explorer to anything upwards in size of a medium SUV and hit the wide, open road!
