Cub Celebrates Dirk Hartog’s 400th Anniversary

9 December 2016

CUB FOUNDER ROGER FAGAN ENJOYS LIFE AS GREY NOMAD AS HE JOINS CUB OWNERS FOR TRIP OF A LIFETIME TO DIRK HARTOG ISLAND.

Cub founder Roger Fagan was only 25 when he set up the iconic Cub Campers with his dad JK back in 1968. Now in his seventies Roger is retired and enjoying the freedom of being a Grey Nomad.

Recently Roger joined a group of Cub owners and other campers on a trek to Dirk Hartog Island off the WA coast to mark the 400thanniversary of Dirk Hartog’s landing at Cape Inscription. The Dutch explorer made one of the first recorded landfalls by a European on the West Australian coastline.

The special trip was organised by Cub’s Western Australia distributor Andrew Fardon, who also runs Campfire Escapes. The group left Perth in their 4WDs and embarked on a 1,000km trip to Shark Bay then on to Dirk Hartog Island to celebrate his landing in 1616.

The group was taken on a barge from Blackies Beach, Steep Point over to the remote island which is renowned for its history, natural beauty, spectacular landscapes and fishing. Dirk Hartog Island is an ‘ark’ for endangered wildlife with only bush tracks to travel along which lead to magnificent camping spots on pristine beaches.

The most western point of Australia has seen it all, from early explorers to a major sheep station, the island is a melting pot of Australian history.

Roger Fagan says, “I am delighted that 12 out of the 16 campers on the trip were in Cubs.  It also made me very proud that all the Cubs made it through the torturous conditions without the slightest problem. The island has no drinking water or supplies, so all campers had to be completely self-sufficient for the 10 days. After decades of manufacturing and selling Cubs throughout Australia, it feels great to be enjoying the life of a Grey Nomad and sharing the Cub life with other Cub owners.”

Organiser, Andrew Fardon who has organised many tag along tours said the trip was a brilliant success and participants said it was a trip of a lifetime.

Currently the National Park is returning the island to its original condition removing all feral animals, goats and cats.
