The Cub Drifter Receives An Upgrade - Cub Campers

The Cub Drifter Receives An Upgrade

3 March 2022

The original Cub Drifter was an iconic family off-roader that was first introduced in the 1970s.  Despite production being halted in the late 1990s, the trailer’s robust design and family-orientated setup with two large beds continues to be a favourite amongst campers all over the country.

In 2020, we brought back the Drifter in the form of a double fold, the only Australian made model of its kind, and it was an instant success. The new Drifter was upgraded and modernised to suit the needs of the next generation of Aussie campers. We were able to build on what made the original Drifter such a success, as well as draw inspiration from market demands for double-fold camper trailers and as a result, the Cub Drifter was awarded the 2021 Camper Trailer of the Year competition’s Best Build Quality award. We added a plethora of options to the competition trailer and based on their popularity, we have now upgraded the Drifter to include a new range of features as standard. Let’s take a look at what the new Drifter has to offer:

Cub Drifter

The first thing you’ll notice is the new colour as the Drifter now has “Monument” panels as standard. The drawbar has been extended by 100mm, allowing for better manoeuvrability as well as improved accessibility to the back of your vehicle whilst the camper is still hitched up. It’s made from 150mm x 50mm x 3.0mm Australian Steel to get you to and from the most remote and rural outback locations. We’ve added an extra clamp on the drawbar that allows you to attach the jockey wheel when towing to help clear up storage space within your vehicle and camper (we understand how valuable storage space is on your trips!)

Inside the camper we’ve extended the bed from a Cub Queen to a Cub King, measuring at leg-stretching 2100mm x 1600mm x 135mm, and to ensure maximum comfort a Slumberest Cloud 9 Pillow Top mattress comes standard, replacing the previous inner-spring mattress. On the dinette area, we have included corner in-fill cushions to eliminate the once-empty corner areas around the table.

Taking the road less travelled and exploring off-grid requires you to put your best foot forward when it comes to power and lighting. We want you to feel right at home, even in the most remote areas so we’ve added two 100ah lithium batteries as standard which are lighter than the AGM batteries previously used, have a longer lifespan and have a greater charging efficiency. Additionally, these batteries have a depth of discharge of around 80-90% (as opposed to AGM batteries which have around 50%), allowing it to be discharged right down to 10-20% of its capacity without affecting the battery’s life cycle and allow for more time off-grid without needing to be charged. Complementary to the battery change, we’ve made the lithium-compatible Projecta IDC25L (12V) and Projecta IC2500L (240V) battery chargers standard in the Drifter. We’ve also equipped a 12V Master Switch and 12V resettable fuse for the fridge to ensure that you have full control over the power in the camper.

Three LED sensor lights have been added – two under the lounges and one in the driver’s side locker – these automatically switch on when accessing these areas. We’ve also added a 12V accessory/USB socket inside the driver’s side locker. The Fusion Stereo with twin speakers are now standard in the Drifter to help you create your perfect camping soundtrack whilst gathering around the campfire.

Now despite adding over 20 new features as standard, we’ve succeeded in making the Drifter lighter. The tare weight comes in at 1414kg which is almost 40kg lighter than the previous model.
