Top Tips for Caravan Safety

19 March 2024

There’s nothing more freeing than hitting the road with just a few essentials on hand to explore the ins and outs of our beautiful country. While caravan life comes with plenty of perks, it’s easy to get swept up in the adventure and lose sight of what’s important: your safety.  Whether you’re planning a quick and easy weekend escape or taking off on a longer journey across the country with no end date in sight, making sure your caravan is safe and secure is key to enjoying a worry-free trip. We’ll walk you through some top tips to keep in mind before you set off, while you’re on the road, and once you’ve reached your destination. From essential pre-trip checks to advice on towing and setting up at your site, make sure your next caravan adventure is not only memorable but also as safe as can be!

Before You Set Off

Taking off on a caravan trip involves plenty of time spent planning your itinerary and packing for the road! But don’t forget to take a look at your caravan as well, and make sure it’s in tip-top condition before you drive.

Checking Your Caravan

Just like any vehicle, regular maintenance for your caravan is essential. It’s all too easy to tuck it away at the end of your trip and only pull it out again when you’re ready to set off. But this period in between trips is just as important. Make sure to have your caravan serviced at least once a year, to make sure any minor issues are picked up and addressed before they become bigger problems.

The most important areas to look over are your tyres, brakes, lights and your towing equipment. These are all essentials on the road that you’ll need in perfect working order before your adventure begins.

Packing Right

Packing might sound simple: load in what you need and keep it light! While this is great in theory, there are other things you should think about to keep you nice and safe on the road.

  • Don’t overload: It’s tempting to cram as much into your space as possible, but overloading your caravan can be dangerous. Check the maximum weight limit and distribute weight evenly.
  • Secure items: Loose items are dangerous if you have to brake suddenly. Use storage compartments and straps to secure everything and make sure all cupboard doors and drawers stay closed while driving.

On the Road

Once you’re all packed and have done your pre-road safety checks, it’s time for your travels to begin! Of course, there’s still plenty more to think about while you’re on the road, so pay attention to these tips.

Towing Safely

Everyone likes to think they’re an expert when it comes to towing a caravan, however it’s a skill that takes practice. If you’re new to caravanning, consider taking a towing course to build your confidence. It’s important to remember that while you might know your tow vehicle inside out, with a caravan attached it will handle differently when it comes to acceleration, braking and turning.

Handling Different Road Conditions

It’s hard to predict exactly what roads you’ll come across when you set out for adventure. Make sure you are prepared for a number of different road conditions. Wet or icy roads can affect stopping distances, while strong winds can be a challenge. It pays to be prepared.

Breakdown and Emergencies

It’s never fun to think of worst-case scenarios when you hit the road, but it does help to be prepared. If you experience a breakdown, pull over safely and turn on your hazard lights. Call for roadside assistance and wait in a safe location.

Always carry an emergency kit in your caravan, including items like a first-aid kit, torch, spare bulbs, fuses, a fire extinguisher and basic tools. This means no matter the time of day, the weather, or where you find yourself stuck, you have what you need at that moment.

At Your Destination

Hooray, you have made it to your destination! This is always a rewarding moment (especially when the kids start acting up on the last leg of the journey),  but make sure you keep the focus on safety as you set up.

When you arrive at your campsite, take a moment to choose the best spot for your caravan. Look for level ground so your caravan is nice and stable and check for any overhead hazards like low-hanging branches.

Once you’ve found the perfect spot, use wheel chocks to secure the caravan and prevent it from rolling. If you’re hooking up to electrical, water, or gas services, ensure all connections are secure and safe. Check for any signs of damage to cables or hoses before you use them.

Unfortunately, caravans can be targets for thieves. It helps to store valuables out of sight and consider using a safe for extra security. It’s also a great idea to introduce yourself to other caravanners in the area. Being part of a community means you all look out for each other and keep everyone safe together.

A little preparation goes a long way when it comes to enjoying a safe and fun adventure on the road. Whether you’re a seasoned caravanner or just starting out, these handy tips will help you navigate all the different aspects of caravan travel with confidence, from preparing for your trip to hitting the road and setting up camp.
