Keeping Warm This Winter: Camper Trailers and Caravan Diesel Heaters
Caravans and camper trailers offer the freedom to explore new horizons, but comfort is key—especially when temperatures drop. That’s where diesel heaters come in. These compact and efficient heating systems ensure you have access to fast and reliable hot water, while staying warm and cozy without relying on electricity or gas.
In this blog, we’ll dive into why diesel heaters are a fantastic option for caravans and camper trailers, and how they work.

Why Choose a Diesel Heater?
Caravan diesel heaters are popular because they offer:
- Fuel Efficiency – Diesel is widely available and burns efficiently, making these heaters cost-effective.
- Consistent Heat – Unlike gas or electric heaters that may struggle in extreme cold, diesel heaters provide reliable access to hot water and warm cabin heating.
- Low Power Consumption – They use minimal electricity, making them ideal for off-grid travellers in both camper trailers and caravans.
- Safe Operation – With proper installation, they are a safe and secure way to heat your caravan and access hot water.
How Do Diesel Heaters Work?
Diesel heaters function by drawing fuel from your Cub 9L diesel tank that is mounted to the drawbar. Here’s a breakdown of the process:
- Diesel fuel is pumped into a combustion chamber.
- The fuel is ignited, generating enough heat to increase the temperature of the glycol mixture that is stored in a tank to roughly 80 degrees Celsius.
- The water for your taps, and air for your heating runs through this mixture in small pipes, creating a heat transfer from the hot glycol to the water/air.
- The hot water/air runs through your taps and fans, allowing for hot showers, hot running water from taps, and heating for your cabin.
- The fumes from the combustion process are expelled outside of the caravan/camper using an exhaust, allowing only clean air into the cabin
These heaters operate on a timer, allowing you to set the heater on, and running until the expiration of your desired run-time.
How to Use the Heater?

The Eberspacher Diesel heater is controlled by the panel from inside the camper/caravan. This controller features a turn dial in the centre, which doubles as the master button. When pushed in, the screen lights up and prompts the user to set a timer for the diesel heater to run for. The button is then pushed again to start the heater, which causes a red-light ring to appear around the button.
The heater will run for the selected time, before the unit turns itself off, visible by the disappearing red-light ring. The unit can be turned off earlier than the set time, simply by pushing the button in again, and selecting ”OFF”.
Which Brand Does Cub Use?

Cub have opted for the Eberspacher Diesel Heater as standard in the caravans and as an option in the camper trailers for a range of the following reasons:
- Brand Reputation – Eberspacher has a great reputation for being efficient, cost-effective
- Heating Time – Some brands of diesel heater will take longer than others to heat. Eberspacher can heat water within 2-3 minutes and provide hot showers within 5 minutes.
